Barbecued Sausage and Vegetable Skewers with Brown Sugar Glaze

This week has been a hot one. And when it is hot I like to keep my oven off as much as possible. Because it just heats up the house way too much. So I love to utilize the barbecue during hot spells. And these barbecued sausage and vegetable skewers were the perfect meal to cook on the barbecue.

I chose to add zucchini, peppers, onions and little potatoes to these skewers. The trick when adding little potatoes to a skewer is to precook them a bit in the microwave or by boiling them before putting your skewers together. This allows everything to cook evenly, including the potatoes.

The flavor of these barbecued sausage and vegetable skewers are brought up a notch with the delicious brown sugar glaze that is basted on during the cook. I recommend using a silicone basting brush. I find that they are easier to clean up and last way longer. The glaze that we brush on was inspired by my Grandma’s sauteed mushroom and onion recipe. She would always add brown sugar and soy sauce. And it was always delicious! And the same is true in this recipe. The brown sugar caramelizes and adds the right amount of sweetness to counteract the saltiness of the soy sauce.

I love skewers because they can be a full meal in one. There is no need to serve with anything else as you have all you need on one stick. But if you are wanting a side, I would recommend a side salad. There is no extra cooking with a salad and it adds a nice fresh touch to the meal.

Barbecued Sausage and Vegetable Skewers with Brown Sugar Glaze

Skewer Ingredients

  • 6 Honey Garlic Sausages, cut into 1½" pieces
  • 1 lb Little Potatoes, precooked
  • 1 small Zucchini, sliced
  • ½ medium Red Onion, large dice
  • 1 Red Pepper, large dice

Brown Sugar Glaze

  • ¼ cup Brown Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Olive Oil
  • 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 1 clove Garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Oregano


  • Place the skewer ingredients on 6-8 skewers, alternating ingredients as you go.
  • Preheat the barbecue to 400°F.
  • Brush half the glaze onto the skewers and place on the barbecue, rotating as necessary, for about 10-15 minutes or until the internal temperature of the sausage is at least 160°F. Halfway through the cook, brush with remaining glaze.
  • Serve!
